Version: 2

X.25 on IPF servers may generate an MCA on the RS-530/RS-449 interface of a RAD switch

NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice.

Release Date: 2006-03-15

Last Updated: 2006-03-13

DESCRIPTION

When used in some Integrity servers, the X.25 2-port PCI card, product number J3525A, may generate a Machine Check Abort (MCA) if connected to a RAD SPS series switch (SPS-12, SPS-3S or SPS-6) using the RS-530 or RS-449 interface.

DETAILS

The issue described above may happen in the following configuration:

When the X.25 card is installed in one of the following HP Integrity servers:
    • HP Integrity Superdome sx2000 Server
    • HP Integrity rx7640 Server
    • HP Integrity rx8640 Server
  • Using any version of the HP X.25 2-port PCI card (J3525A).
  • Using any RAD SPS series switch (SPS-12, SPS-3S, or SPS-6). See the RAD SPS switch information at:

    http://www.rad.com/Article/0,6583,25075,00.html .

  • Only when using the RS-530 or RS-449 interface.

The issue is due to a design defect in the RAD switch implementation of the RS-530 and RS-449 interfaces loop-around test pins, which causes over current into the X.25 card in some situations. This was only observed with a card installed in the sx2000 systems due to its lower short circuit current limit and threshold voltage.

HP recommends not using the X.25 card in the above configuration without protecting it from these peaks of current. The solution recommended by HP consists of inserting a special DB25 Male/Female mini-adapter, with pins 18 and 21 disconnected, between the X.25 switch and the cable connector, as shown in the following graphic:

The following picture shows how to connect the adapter to the cable (this should be done on the cable connector to be plugged to the switch connector):
